SAVE VENICE BOSTON GALA WEEKEND IN BOSTON
|
"Serenissima on the Charles"
|
|
Thursday April 30th to Sunday May 3rd, 2009
|
Dear Friends of Save Venice,
The Boston Chapter of Save Venice invites you to enjoy a long weekend in Boston, April 30th to May 3rd, 2009, to celebrate the connections between Boston and la Serenissima.
This trip is designed around the first exhibition to juxtapose the three greatest Venetian painters of the 16th century: Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese: Rivals in Renaissance Venice. The fifty-six paintings come from world?s top museums, and include many from Italy, with two restored by Save Venice. The Museum of Fine Arts will be the exhibition?s only venue in North America.
Saluting Venetian art in Boston is fitting because this city and environs contain many masterpieces from Venice. Architectural landmarks inspired by Venice include Isabella Stewart Gardner's palazzo, and the weekend will feature a gala dinner in this special structure, now the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
If you don?t know Boston, you will be impressed by its beauty and character, and appreciate its reputation as the most European city in America. We will enjoy historic architecture and meals in special locations, including museums, clubs, and private homes. Our program includes lectures, tours, and private concerts. Appropriately, the weekend will raise funds to restore paintings by Veronese in the church of San Sebastiano.
Our trip will include a day in Newport, the 19th-century playground of the fabulously wealthy, sixty miles south of Boston, with visits to historic mansions and lunch at Bellevue House, a grand private residence designed by Ogden Codman.
A highlight will be a special visit to the Tintoretto, Titian, Veronese before the museum opens to the public. Curator Frederick Ilchman and Conservator Rhona MacBeth will lead us through this unprecedented exhibition.
You will be responsible for securing your own transportation to Boston and hotel reservations. The Taj Hotel, (formerly the Ritz-Carlton) arguably the best and certainly best-located hotel in Boston, will be our base. They have offered supporters of Save Venice a special rate, and we encourage you to take advantage of this. Please contact the Taj yourself using the information on the enclosed sheet.
We emphasize that our group will not be a large one, and will be limited to fifty guests, allowing us to be welcomed into more intimate settings, including private homes. Please return the enclosed form with a check to reserve your place. We expect this trip to sell out quickly, and we hope you will join us.
Yours sincerely,
|
